Insight into Bradley Philip-Bayliss… Future Instagram model, current recruitment consultant!
What is your role at Insight and how did you get here?
I am a recruitment consultant and my role here at Insight is finding the best electrical engineering talent in the UK and the best clients for them to work for. I sort of stumbled across recruitment whilst looking for a career that I could really get into and invest myself into for the long term and so far, it looks great.
I studied psychology and decided very quickly I didn’t want to go down that route. Through a mixture of ballsy chance-taking and entrepreneurial good fortune, I ended up doing some cool stuff in the property sector for a few years before deciding to leave it all and go on a leadership development training program in Los Angeles.
California was great, but the time came to return from the miserable year-round sunshine to the glorious rain of Manchester. I looked into a few options and found recruitment. When I met the guys at Insight it was a no-brainer that this is where I wanted to be.
How do the company values of Insight match up with you personally?
I have always been a very driven person; I am happiest when I’m chasing down a target. That hard work and drive goes hand in hand with innovation. Following a set path will get results but life is rarely a case of painting by numbers. Sometimes you have to colour outside the lines and sometimes you just have to draw your own picture. Life is more interesting when you get a bit creative with things.
Teamwork is another vital factor in success and teamwork is built on relationships. Relationships are built on trust, and trust is built on honesty. Because of that, I don’t think there is ever really sustained success if there isn’t honesty. No-one goes far alone.
Caring about what you do will mean that you’re passionate about what you do. If you care about the difference you’re making, then it makes the dull moments worth it. Caring helps you keep plodding when it’s not the best of days and if you plod long enough you’ll usually win.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is every happy customer. Clients and candidates who are happy with the service I’ve provided. Success would be doing my job so well that all my business comes from referrals. In the short term, success is learning my market inside out and building my network within the wonderful world of engineering. Eventually, I will be so successful in recruitment that I will be able to retire and follow my dream of being an Instagram model, get invited onto an episode of MTV Cribs and have a “Ferrari of the day”.
What are your top tips for success?
First thing I would say is to decide what success looks like to you. You will never hit your target if you don’t know what you’re aiming for. Second thing is to work out where you are and how to get from where you are to where you want to be. Finding a mentor is invaluable for this. Third and final thing is to work hard. Hard work always beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
What’s the best advice you have for anyone on the job hunt?
Use a recruitment agency! Not just any agency though; it has to be a good one. Personally, I would go off recommendation. Put it out on social media and people will respond. A good agency will work for you for free and do their absolute best to get you your perfect job. Tell them what you want and they will go and do it for free! It is in their interest to make you happy because then you’ll tell your friends and they’ll tell their friends and referrals are awesome. Did I mention that, for you, it is completely FREE?!
Tell us about yourself on a personal level – when you’re not working, what do you enjoy doing?
Outside of work I love typical lad things like cars and football. I probably spend more time in my car than my house. When I’m not driving around, I can be found moaning about Manchester United (could be worse, I could be a Liverpool fan), or over in Salford working with a wonderful group of kids as part of Victory Outreach Manchester. I’m part of a really great team over there and have loads of fun mentoring and teaching young people. In between all that I am in the middle of planning a wedding with my amazing fiancé! We get married in June so it’s just around the corner now and there’s loads to do 😊
